in order to reduce the amount of experience 'bean counting', i handle experience like this:
if a character rolls 6 or less on a skill check/test, he/she gets 1 experience point.
skill/spell level costs: 1=10XP 2=20XP 3=30XP 4=40XP 5=50XP 6=60XP

Although it's very old school (as in Tunnels & Trolls and BRP) to reward successful skill rolls with XP, it becomes problematic for a variety of reasons the most obvious being characters who are very good with a particular skill succeed more and therefore reap more rewards than more modestly skilled characters. Unlike BRP, there's no diminishing return. This could lead to players scrabbling over one another in the hopes of getting to roll and therefore earn XP. This "too many cooks" is best avoided IMO.
I'd prefer a set session XP award with bonus XP awarded for roleplay, good timing, fair play, puntuality, etc. This means almost no book-keeping which is preferable.

Morgan it's kinda hard to do that in solo, GM-less play.

also, i think both methods combine to form a whole. pre-defined methods of gaining experience plus surprise or bonus rewards.
