as many of you know, dark city games' adventures use what are known as Assisted and Required skill checks. for those not familiar, any character can attempt an Assisted Skill check. only a character that possesses the specified skill can attempt a Required Skill check. the adventures specify an Assisted Skill check as '3/ST+Climbing' for example. in this example, even a character that does not possess the Climbing skill can attempt the action. in this example, perhaps the check is made for climbing a tree - something anyone could attempt. climbing a completely vertical wall might require a Required Skill check, written as '3/ST against Climbing'. In this example, only characters that possess the Climbing skill may attempt the check.
to me, a better example of a Required Skill check is '3/DX against Locks'. i might be very good with my hands but, having no knowledge of lock-picking, i would never be able to pick the dead-bolt lock on the front door of my house. locks on bedroom doors within my house are quite simple. there's a small hole in the middle of the knob. simply insert a q-tip or any straight shaft that will fit in the hole and the door unlocks. that would be a '3/DX+Locks' check.
here's how i handle these in HOW terms (assuming no other modifying circumstances):
assisted - characters with the specified skill may attempt with 3 die. characters without the specified skill may attempt with 4 die.
required - characters with the specified skill may attempt with 4 die. characters without the specified skill may attempt with 5 die.
in different words, assisted checks require 3 die. if you don't have the skill, add a die. required checks require 4 die. if you don't have the skill, add a die.
i would be interested in hearing how others handle these checks in a HOW manner.
