One of the additions coming in Blades & Black Magic are optional Background/Career paths. Here is how they work, after you have spent your hero points on your attributes...you have the option to pick a background and may roll on it 1 time for each skill point you decide to spend on your background, up to 5 times. This still let's you pick a specific skill or spell you want while still getting to roll and see if something unique or interesting might randomly happen.
In addition, it allows a Referee to use the table to create quickly a specific NPC type.
Below is an example of a generic "Wizard Apprentice"
2d6 roll Wizard Apprentice
2 Start a new career path
3 Staff or Dagger Skill +1
4 Learn IQ10 Spell
5 Learn IQ9 Spell
6 Learn IQ8 Spell
7 Scholar Or Literacy Skill +1
8 Lore or Naturalist Skill +1
9 IQ+1
10 EN+1
11 ST+1
12 Died in accident
