Do warriors from the East with strange techniques make sense in Conan? I think so!
I have a player who loves monks so I made several new UC skills. Unlike any of the skills in Blades, these have prerequisites.
As an aside, I gotta say that I really like removing the IQ requirements from talents. The attributes already act as a limitation of their own anyway. I see this is in HOW as well but I never got that (until buying it just now).
Here's the document where I'm maintaining the mods.
I haven't yet been able to play test these but much of it just opens up existing combat options to martial artists through skill-buys.
I'll paste the current contents here, lemme know what you think:
Martial Strike (DX) -- requires same training level in UC
Only usable unarmored or with armor 1 (gambeson, etc.) and unarmed or with weapons that make sense to the GM (nunchuks, manriki gusari, kinves, etc.)
Trained treats an unarmed attack as attacking from higher ground (+2 DX, +2 damage)
Expert treats an unarmed attack as attacking from behind except that shield protection is figured normally (+4 DX, +1d damage)
Expert treats attacks with weapons that make sense to the GM (manriki gusari, nunchuks, etc.) as attacking from higher ground
Experts may use this with thrown unique weapons that make sense (shuriken, darts, knives, etc.)
May use DX instead of ST for push-backs and gain the same advantage (+2 or +4). Also, you may push a foe with higher attribute by winning an opposed roll
An opponent who has taken enough damage to be knocked down must win an opposed roll with you to remain standing, you may use your DX
Unarmed Blocking (DX) -- requires same training level in UC
Only usable unarmored or with armor 1 (gambeson, etc.) and unarmed or with weapons that make sense to the GM (nunchuks, manriki gusari, kinves, etc.)
You may use these techniques as if you held a shield: 1 point for trained, 2 points for expert. This includes "block" and "shield bash" actions
Trained: you may use DX instead of ST on a shield bash roll and success also does normal UC damage (i.e. +1 if expert but this is not a martial strike)
Experts who successfully shield bash may put the knocked-down opponent in an adjacent space, like a push-back
You may use your DX to resist shield bashes, knock-downs, and push-backs
Iron Skin -- requires expert Unarmed Blocking
Only usable unarmored or with armor 1 (gambeson, etc.)
Technique acts as armor: 1 point for trained, 2 points for expert
Evasion (DX) -- requires expert Unarmed Blocking
Only usable unarmored or with armor 1 (gambeson, etc.) and unarmed or with weapons that make sense to the GM (nunchuks, manriki gusari, kinves, etc.)
Melee attacks against you become opposed rolls.
Uncanny Awareness (DX) -- requires expert Evasion
Only usable unarmored or with armor 1 (gambeson, etc.) and unarmed or with weapons that make sense to the GM (nunchuks, manriki gusari, kinves, etc.)
You are incredibly hard to corner and you can attack around you. Trained: side hexes are front hexes and rear hex is a side hex. Expert: all hexes are front hexes.
Ground Fighting (DX) -- requires same training level in UC
Only usable unarmored or with armor 1 (gambeson, etc.) and unarmed or with weapons that make sense to the GM (nunchuks, manriki gusari, kinves, etc.)
Gain +1 in grapple rolls and you may use DX instead of ST for grappling
Whenever you succeed in an unarmed push-back or shield bash, you may instead move into the opponent's hex or pull the opponent into your hex
Trained allows striking (unarmed or with weapons that make sense to the GM, like knives, manriki gusari, etc.) during a grapple, if in control -- shields don't protect
Experts ignore artificial armor when striking in a grapple (i.e. doesn't ignore gargoyle skin or Iron Skin)
Footwork (DX) -- requires same training level in UC
After any successful offensive UC action (attack, shield bash, etc.), you may attempt an opposed roll to perform a shift, potentially breaking engagement
Experts may move 2 spaces (potentially using a flying kick)
Flying Kick (DX) - requires same training level in UC
You may perform a foot charge as if you were using a pole arm
