i finally managed to cram the info from pg.43,44 into my tiny brain. i did it by rewritting it in a sort of inverse fashion. this may help others so i'm posting it.
i believe the above is 100% accurate and in agreement with the RAW. please double-check me. there is one exception. i purposely altered the bolded text to make more sense. the original text was "Defend against a melee attack". i truly believe the intent was "Defend against an adjacent foe". it would be quite silly if a guy with a readied missile weapon moved into engagement with me, fired his bow, and i could not dodge it or block with a shield.
(added) I also refined the definition of 'engaged' so that not just any adjacent foe engages you but only one with a readied melee weapon. fists and feet count as melee weapons. melee weapon or not, i would not consider a non-standing humanoid capable of engaging either. in light of those refinements, i suppose "Defend against a melee attack" is accurate enough since the bowman beside me wouldn't actually put me in an engaged state until he dropped the bow.
Actions in Combat
Combat Options available depend upon whether or not the Hero is engaged (adjacent to an opponent) and how far he moved in the movement phase.
Combat Options
•Attack with an in hand weapon.
•Attempt to disbelieve an illusion or image.
•Cast a spell.
•Drop to a prone position or stand up.
•Exchange in-hand item with another Hero; both must choose this option.
•Fire a bow or crossbow.
•Load a crossbow.
•Parry, Block, or Dodge and attack.
•Ready a new weapon or pick up a dropped weapon within 5’ (1 space) of you.
•Throw a held weapon at -1DX for every 10’ (2 spaces).
If a character moves 2 or more spaces, he cannot:
•Fire a bow.
•Load a crossbow
•Cast a spell
However, he CAN charge with a pole arm weapon causing +1d6 damage if he hits.
If a character moves 3 or more spaces, he cannot:
•Attempt to disbelieve an illusion or image.
•Exchange in-hand items.
•Ready a new weapon or pick up a dropped weapon.
If a character moves 1/2 to full MV, he can take no other actions.
Engaged Actions
An engaged Hero or creature is one who is adjacent (next to) an enemy ready to engage in melee combat. An engaged Hero can perform any of the Combat Options with the following exceptions:
•Fire readied missile weapon; cannot reload
•Defend against attacks from adjacent foes only.
•Moving away from an adjacent foe requires a 4/DX test.
